12 Things to Do around Chicago for Juneteenth weekend

Our weekly things-to-do guide takes on a special theme today, letting you know about gatherings, concerts and all kinds of ways to celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. This year June 19 falls on a Monday and events take place all weekend.

Music headliners include DJ Envy and DJ Sean Mac, plus the live band The Kingsguard. This event presented by Moor’s Beer also includes an open bar and food by Chicago Black-owned distilleries, caterers and restaurants.

Celebrate Juneteenth with a free concert and spoken-word event at the Old Town School hosted by Bill Brickey and featuring Chicago Poet Laureate avery r young and de deacon board, plus Mars Caulton, Alycia Kamil, Lenny Marsh and Michael Taylor.

This market celebrates Black creativity and entrepreneurship, with more than 50 local Black-owned businesses selling items such as clothes, art and accessories. There will be live entertainment and admission to this 21+ event also includes a sample welcome cocktail. 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 16 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 220 E. This three-day Juneteenth celebration in Garfield Park will include cultural activities, educational workshops, art and performances from Do or Die and Crucial Conflict. The event kicks off with a military honors reception Friday night that will honor Black military personnel. Saturday is a Youth Day, where dancers will take part in a citywide dance battle and young artists will perform at Garfield Park’s Music Court Drive. Sunday will feature a Father’s Day cook-off and house music event.

The DuSable’s Juneteenth celebration is back for the third year. The festival will have many family-friendly activities, including inflatables, games and a petting zoo. There will also be a marketplace, giveaways, food and drinks, and musical performances. Rapper Kool Moe Dee will also be featured in a discussion session marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

Chicago historian and TikTok star Shermann “Dilla” Thomas will lead a two-hour bus tour around the South Side, followed by a beach party celebration. Tickets include tour and beach party admission, a gift bag and refreshments.

This Juneteenth celebration highlights the works of Black writers and artists. There will be a reading from Jaha Nailah Avery’s “Those Who Saw the Sun” and a talk featuring Chicago artists Dorothy Burge, Damon Reed and Dorian Sylvain.

On the Annoyance mainstage Saturday, this 70-minute comedy special features short-form, hip-prov comedy by an all-star cast of Black improvisers.

As presented by the Hawkins House of Horton dance school, this event at Silverroom in Hyde Park will include performances, dance classes, food and more, including performances from Chicago rapper Boy Illinois, singer and actor Daryn Alexus and the soul-infused pop of Taylor Iman.

The theme this year for this neighborhood celebration is “Strengthening the Roots,” with live entertainment for all ages indoors and out at Absolutely Anything Essential. Hear from local historians including Bronzeville resident Chester Mitchell and check out the work of local artists, plus an appearance from Blaq Ice, dubbed King of Chicago Poetry.

Chicago’s longtime tap dance collective partners with the Harold Washington Cultural Center and Bronzeville businesses for an annual Juneteenth celebration, with live dance, music and DJs, plus food, workshops and children’s activities. There will be performances by M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Chicago Tap Theatre, Blu Rhythm Crew and more.

More than 30 vendors selling clothing, candles, art, beauty products and more will be at this pop-up market celebrating Black businesses.
