COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies arrested a man after a 4-year-old boy was struck by a bullet inside a Collier County home Monday night.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the shooting occurred on Dogwood Way at around 11:40 p.m.
A family was having a Christmas gathering when 41-year-old Diego Uriel Diaz Martinez made it clear he was intrigued by a gun in the home. He asked to hold the firearm because he wanted to buy one of his own. Martinez’s cousin obliged and retrieved the gun from his safe. He warned Diaz Martinez that there was a magazine in the gun, but it was not loaded.
Diaz Martinez grabbed the gun — while holding a child. When he cocked back the gun and pulled the trigger, a bullet was fired into the wall and hit a child in the living room.
The boy was taken to NCH North Naples for the gunshot wound on his leg.
Diaz Martinez faces charges of shooting into a building, child neglect and using a gun under the influence.
