The Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday placed rookie defenseman Kevin Korchinski on the non-roster and recalled Isaak Phillips from the Rockford IceHogs.

“The only news that I have is he’s just tending to a family matter right now,” coach Luke Richardson said after an optional morning skate at the United Center. “No timeline (for his return) yet. We just found out last night.”

Korchinski left the team after practice Friday.

In 25 games for the Hawks this season, he has two goals and five assists.

He has spent slightly more than half his ice time paired with Connor Murphy, though he also has spent more than a third of his minutes with Seth Jones, including Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks.

Korchinski has been a fixture on the power play and was briefly elevated to the top unit. Richardson said the Hawks “absolutely” will miss him.

“He’s just starting to scratch the surface of his ability in being confident of that (ability) at this level,” Richardson said. “Last game (against the Ducks) he had a great rush, and he’s starting to shoot the puck over the last few games and we’re trying to promote that: to have the confidence and look for those opportunities because he’s definitely an offensive threat out there.

“Definitely we’re going to miss him, but we wish him all the best.”

Phillips has played nine games this season and has three assists. He’ll pair with Jones on Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues.

For years the Hawks had smallish blue-liners, but with Phillips (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) joining Alex Vlasic (6-6, 217) and Louis Crevier (6-8, 228) — who’ll be paired together — they’ll have some young giants on the back end.

“That’s going to be the name of the game tonight on defense with the size,” Richardson said. “(We’ll) use that to our advantage to really take away all the time and space St. Louis is going to try and look for.

“Most of the guys tonight are physical guys, and I think we want them to be miserable to play against.”

Meanwhile, the Hawks have scratched forward Ryan Donato because of an illness — for now. Reese Johnson will draw into the lineup.

“Donato isn’t feeling great this morning,” Richardson said. “We’ll see how he does this afternoon and hopefully it doesn’t run through the team.

“We had to get him out of the rink this morning when he showed up not feeling well.”
