COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Naples Vice Mayor Michael McCabe announced his resignation during a 20-minute speech to City Council Staff on Monday evening, citing concerns about government overreach and a financial disclosure form.
“This has forced me to a point that I would never imagine what I must do. I will be resigning from my position at the Naples City Council, effective December 31st. It truly pains me to step away. But when the legislature changes the game, it stacks the deck to the point where the assault is too great,” McCabe said as he addressed the Council.
Senate Bill 774 (also known as “Form 6”) has been utilized by County and State officials since the late 1960s and 1970s.
It now requires all local government officials to disclose their assets, liabilities, business dealings, and financial information over $1,000 by Dec. 31st.
“The form has been weaponized against our public officials. This is the most egregious assault on privacy. It’s an assault on one’s rights. It’s an assault on the Second Amendment. And it’s an unacceptable government instruction,” McCabe added in his resignation speech.
During the same meeting, the City Council addressed an emergency agenda item, discussing the possibility of Councilwoman Beth Petrunuff’s seat. controversial form. Petrunoff raised the prospect of resignation due to the same form earlier in the month.
McCabe is the first Naples City Council member to officially resign over the disclosure forms. His decision leaves an additional seat (now 4) available for new candidates in the upcoming spring election.
It is unclear at this time if the Council will appoint a temporary replacement for the next three months or wait until the spring.
