ESTERO, Fla. — Only in Florida, right? Shoppers at the Coconut Point Mall in Estero stood by in awe as crews captured a gigantic alligator.
According to a Facebook post from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the behemoth alligator weighs 600 pounds.
To put that into perspective, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) website says the state record for the length of an American alligator was a 14-feet, 3-and-a-half-inch male from Lake Washington in Brevard County.
On average female alligators rarely exceed 10 feet, while males can grow exceedingly larger, according to FWC.
LCSO said the gator will be taken to safer waterways.
The American alligator is federally protected by the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species, due to its similar features to the American crocodile.
According to FWC, the alligator was captured under the State Nuisance Alligator Program. SNAP addresses alligator threats in developed areas and focuses on conserving them in their natural habitat.
