Two deputies shot and killed a person in Franklin County, North Carolina, early Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputies have been put on administrative leave, the sheriff’s office said. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in these types of cases.

The sheriff’s office said the deputies were not injured in the incident.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office released very limited information on what happened Thursday morning, sharing a five-sentence statement on the shooting Friday morning.

Franklin County is a largely rural area northeast of Raleigh. The sheriff’s office did not specify where the incident happened or what led up to the shooting.

This is the 60th shooting involving on-duty police or deputies in North Carolina in 2023, according to tracking of these incidents by Spectrum News 1.
