CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Rubber burn marks stain the Coralwood shopping plaza parking lot after neighbors say drivers continuously interrupt the peace along SE 17th place in Cape Coral.
“Floridians, know the ‘get off my lawn’ and slow down,” Adam Hindson said. “It’s part of our DNA.”
But what’s not part of their DNA is the rising tempers. One of their neighbors even got into a fight a few weeks ago.
“Three cop cars, and an ambulance, and then a story came out where the speeding and the donuts, there was a physical confrontation,” Hindson said.
All because of reckless drivers.
“I would say mostly coops and the Hondas with modified tailpipes, things you’d expect to see teenagers driving,” Hindson said.
Neighbors said it interrupts the peace in their neighborhood.
“I heard them this was about four in the afternoon on a Sunday,” he said. “I remember watching the football game and I just was like, there’s no point of me going out saying don’t do donuts and doing all this.”
Neighbors said their street is known as drag strip lane. They hear constant engines revving and tires squeaking at all hours. It’s a problem they tried to resolve years ago.
“We made a pretty diligent effort in 2016 to see if we could address these problems, neighbors and I got together and went to transportation advisory committee’s meetings,” Chip Green said.
Greene said his pleas are ignored, but he wants to see a change soon.
“Enforcement isn’t going to do it; it will be physical barriers to calm this thing down,” Greene said.
A solution, neighbors said they have asked the city to add speed bumps to their 25-mile-per-hour road. That way, they can put dangerous drivers in their rearview mirror.
