Two women shot to death in west suburban Cicero Tuesday night have been identified after the alleged gunman died of self-inflicted wounds.

Police found Myeshia Newby, 19, and Jessica Hughes, 29, fatally wounded while responding to the 1800 block of South 48 Court around 7:45 p.m. Both Newby and Hughes appear to have lived on the block where the shooting took place.

Both women were taken to Mt. Sinai hospital, where they died.

Cicero spokesperson Ray Hanania confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a young child was at the scene of the shooting Tuesday night. Authorities put the child, a baby, in the custody of surviving family members, he said.

“The baby appeared to be in good shape,” he said.

However, this morning, the baby was taken to a hospital, he said. Cicero police are trying to learn the circumstances surrounding the hospitalization, Hanania said.

A 9-month-old child with gunshot wounds was hospitalized at St. Anthony Hospital in Lawndale, near Cicero, Wednesday morning before being transported in critical condition by Chicago Fire Department paramedics to Comer Children’s Hospital, CFD spokesperson Larry Langford said.

Langford said he did not know the circumstances regarding how or where the child was shot. A Chicago Police Department spokesperson declined to comment on the child’s hospitalization.

Cicero police believe Newby and Hughes were shot in a domestic dispute, spokesperson Ray Hannania told the Tribune. Police are treating the shooting as an isolated incident.

Police started investigating one person of interest Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, a man was found with a self-inflicted wound in a nearby park.
