Police are looking for a man accused of assaulting an officer at a Sheetz gas station in Hillsborough, North Carolina, on Wednesday afternoon. The man dragged the officer with his SUV as he made his getaway, police said.
The Hillsborough Police Department did not name the officer but said the officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The incident started when police went to the Sheetz at 1990 N.C. 86 S. in Hillsborough at about 2:15 p.m. for a report of a larceny, police said in a news release.
While the officers were at the gas station, they were alerted to someone trying to steal from the gas station while they were there, police said.
When they went up to the suspect, police say the man assaulted an officer in the store before running to an SUV parked outside.
Police say the man got in the driver’s seat of a GMC Terrain SLE and assaulted the officer again as police tried to pull him from the SUV.
The man then put the SUV in drive and dragged the officer, police said.
Police described the man as “a black male subject wearing a green Columbia zip-up jacket, blue jeans, camouflage ball cap and black shoes with white soles.”
The department asks anyone with information to contact investigator Andrew Jones at 919-296-9562 or by email through the department’s website. Anonymous tips can be reported at 919-296-9555.
