A woman charged at police with two knives before officers shot her at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday morning in Lenoir, North Carolina, according to authorities.

The woman, who has not been identified, later died at a hospital, police said. No officers were injured.

Police said the officers “perceived a lethal threat and one officer fired at the woman in an attempt to stop the perceived threat.”

“Medic was on the scene and immediately attempted to render life-saving first aid to the subject,” police said in a news release. 

The Lenoir Police Department said officers went to a home at 1983 Starcross Road in Lenoir Tuesday in response to a call about a possible drug overdose.

Authorities said a woman at the home “became agitated” and pulled two knives on the officers. When she refused to drop the knives, an officer used his Taser on the woman, police said. 

“The woman dropped the weapons momentarily before retrieving them and charging at the officers with the knives in a narrow hallway of the home,” police said. That’s when one of the police officers shot the woman. 

Officials said the State Bureau of Investigation and the Lenoir Police Department’s internal affairs unit are investigating.
