Rare video shows inmates in their cells in El Salvador’s mega-jail

Just days after El Salvador’s general election, the BBC was invited on a carefully orchestrated, guided tour of the country’s controversial mega-jail that holds thousands of inmates.

El Salvador’s murder rate has plummeted since President Nayib Bukele introduced emergency measures in March 2022, with his government attributing the success to his crackdown on crime.

More than 75,000 people have been arrested under a new security policy in just under two years but human rights organisations say they are concerned about prisoner rights.
