Program on Naperville’s coal power use being held at NCC

The League of Women Voters of Naperville, North Central College Environmental Studies Program and several environmental groups are among the organizations co-sponsoring an upcoming discussion on coal power as Naperville officials consider a long-term contract extension with Prairie State Energy Campus.

The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, at the Wentz Science Center on the North Central College campus, 160 E. Chicago Ave.

Area environmental organizations question whether a 30-year contract extension makes sense with changes and innovations in the power industry, according to a newsletter from the League of Women Voters of Naperville.

The Naperville Environment and Sustainability Task Force and other organizations said they want to know if the proposed contract offers a clean energy transition off coal and how the city plans to respond to the changes in energy generation, the newsletter said.

Other program sponsors include NEST, Citizens’ Climate Lobby of Greater Naperville, Citizens’ Utility Board, Sierra Club and the Tri-Cities Coalition.

Prairie State Energy Campus is a downstate plant that provides nearly 80% of the city’s electric power, the newsletter said.

Anderson named new DuPage Children’s Museum board member

Naperville resident Laura J. Anderson, chief financial officer and treasurer of the Big Ten Conference, has been named to the board of the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville.

Anderson, who has a bachelor’s of science degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was recently named one of Crain’s Chicago Business notable CFOs. She previously was a senior financial advisor for ESI Consultants in Naperville and worked in public accounting at Arthur Anderson.

She has previously been president of the Junior League of Chicago board and acted as CEO for the 1,500-member women’s volunteer organization that empowers at-risk families.

Mother of two children, Anderson also has volunteered at Hesed House, Morton Arboretum and in Naperville District 203 schools.

Naperville Park District to hold two hiring events in March

Naperville Park District will host two hiring events in March for job candidates seeking summer employment or part-time work.

The hiring events are set for 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, March 11, and Thursday, March 28, at the Fort Hill Activity Center, 20 Fort Hill Drive.

Participants can speak directly with hiring managers about various park district positions.

Opportunities are available for high school and college students for summer employment or internships and for adults looking for a flexible work schedule, a news release. Positions are available at Centennial Beach, the Paddleboat Quarry, summer camps, park maintenance, golf, customer services and more.

Weed Ladies spring sale at Settlement set for March 21-22

The Weed Ladies of the Naperville Heritage Society will be selling their handmade spring-themed floral décor at a Spring Preview Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21-22 at the Daniels House at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St.

The volunteer group creates one-of-a-kind silk or dried floral creations, with proceeds benefitting the heritage society, a nonprofit grout to oversees Naper Settlement.
