On Tuesday, the Brentwood Planning Commission unanimously voted to approve a new Costco location in the East Bay city, as first reported by the East Bay Times. The big-box retail corporation proposed building a 154,852-square-foot warehouse, a gas station with 16 pumps, and a parking lot with spaces for 864 vehicles.
Costco‘s plans to build on the two vacant parcels south of Lone Tree Plaza Drive and east of Heidorn Ranch Road include a bakery, a pharmacy, an optical center, a hearing aid testing center, a food court, alcohol sales, and a tire sales and installation center. Construction is set to begin later this summer, Brentwood City Manager Tim Ogden told SFGATE.
Some residents and commissioners in the Planning Commission meeting cited concerns over traffic associated with the proposed store. To address this, Brentwood senior planner Jennifer Hagen said that the project would create four additional driveways on Lone Tree Plaza Drive, as well as a pedestrian bridge and trail, according to the East Bay Times.
Building a Costco in Brentwood only became possible in 2020, when the Brentwood City Council removed a prohibition against big-box retail in the city, according to the East Bay Times.
The membership-only chain has 133 locations in California, with over 20 stores in the Bay Area. The closest stores to Brentwood are in Antioch and Tracy. Costco declined to comment on the proposed Brentwood store to SFGATE.
