An unidentified victim was pronounced dead after police responded to a traffic crash in an alley and found a vehicle on fire in the predawn hours in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to an alley in the 5400 block of West Jackson Boulevard where they found a male victim in the driver seat of a vehicle that was on fire, Chicago police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger of the vehicle told police they were driving southbound in the alley when they heard shots. The driver reversed and struck a pole, and the vehicle caught fire. The passenger was able to exit before the vehicle ignited, police said.

Detectives were investigating.
