BURLINGTON, N.C. — The Burlington pickleball community will soon get 23 new courts. 

This September, 17 regulation U.S. pickleball courts will open at Burlington City Park. 

The city will also convert two tennis courts into six pickleball courts at Fairchild Park. 

Burlington pickleball instructor and player Tammy Kasserman said there is currently only one dedicated space for pickleball in the Alamance County area. 

She said the new courts will make pickleball more accessible for many people in the Triad.

“We are very excited about it. We have somewhere to go that is dedicated. We don’t have to worry about five, 10 or 20 different lines. It’s a dedicated pickleball court,” Kasserman said.

Burlington public information officer John Vernon said city leaders hope the additions will serve people across the state and contribute to sports tourism in the area. 

“There’s an opportunity to build this first-class facility that can bring sports tournaments and pickleball tournaments to Burlington, and they will pay a fee for that tournament, and it will bring people to town that would spend money as well,” Vernon said. “That will generate revenue, and that will offset the cost for this.”

The Burlington City Council approved the $4.6 million project in 2022.
