RALEIGH, N.C. — An emergency involving a medical plane on one of Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s runways caused the airfield to shut down Wednesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center.

The crash, which involved two people on board, happened at about 10:15 a.m., the FAA said.

The medical plane, a Spcata TBM-700, belonged to UNC Air Operations, according to Alan Wolf, a spokesperson for UNC Health.

“UNC Health has learned that one of its UNC Air Operations medical planes crashed this morning at RDU. The plane was carrying one physician and the pilot. Both have been taken to the hospital,” Wolf said in a statement.

Raleigh Fire Department said they are assisting RDU in responding to the runway emergency.

A look at the airport’s arrivals and departures status revealed most flights either being delayed or diverted.
