Aldi Announces Major Discounts on 250 Popular Items

As one of America’s fastest-growing and most affordable grocery stores, Aldi has a reputation to uphold.

The retailer currently has 2,372 locations in the United States, a scale it attributes to consistently low prices and high quality. This summer, Aldi will put its money where its mouth is by further dropping the price on more than 250 items for a total of $100 million in savings passed on to consumers. So start writing up a shopping list.

As noted in the press release, this promotion, which lasts through Labor Day, is a one-upping of last year’s summer savings event in which Aldi announced price cuts totaling $60 million. This year’s discounted items, geared toward summer activities like cookouts and picnics, include staples such as produce, meat, cheese, snacks, desserts, beverages, and French fries. While many of the discounts amount to 5 or 10 percent off the original price, some reductions are more significant, such as the USDA Choice Black Angus Sirloin Steak, dropping from $8.49 to $6.99. Even in small increments, these discounts can add up over an entire grocery bill.

“Aldi is always looking for ways to help customers save money, but with more experts warning of persistent inflation, the time was right to deliver even greater discounts on our already low prices for the second year in a row,” Dave Rinaldo, president at Aldi U.S., said in the statement. He added, “We don’t want food prices to hold people back from getting together with friends and family or spending time outdoors this season,” which, while inherently promotional, still feels nice to hear from a major retail chain.

Aldi makes a point to be transparent about the ways in which it saves consumers money, perhaps because it doesn’t want the default assumption to be that lower costs must mean lower quality. Instead, the company points to all sorts of clever ways it keeps its own overhead costs low.

In a 2022 press release, for example, it said that the chain remains focused on sourcing quality groceries “instead of wasting time (and money) on all the extra noise, like apples stacked in a fancy pyramid.” At Aldi, all produce items are simply displayed in the shipping boxes in which they arrive, which means employees can focus on bringing more items to the floor and ringing up customers. The store also declines to play music, thereby saving on licensing fees. And yes, even the much-maligned (yet begrudgingly respected) quarter cart system, in which customers deposit 25 cents and have their quarter returned to them when they put the cart back, ensures that Aldi doesn’t have to spend on cart wranglers.

Aldi notes that Americans’ demand for low-cost groceries is responsible for driving its growth, and the company plans to open 800 more U.S. locations over the next five years.
