Over Russell Topp’s 14 years as a high school rowing coach, he’s developed a natural sense for judging which boat is in the lead during a race — even when watching from all the way across the river. The Wakefield coach watched his girls’ top varsity eight boat from an odd sideline angle during Saturday’s Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association state championships on the Occoquan River, but he knew as soon as the group came into his sightline that his team held a sizable advantage.
