Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico, remains in serious condition on Thursday after being shot at five times at close range, leaving his nation looking for answers — and on edge.

The populist leader was airlifted to a hospital on Wednesday and underwent extensive surgery for “life-threatening” injuries. On Thursday morning, Miriam Lapunikova, director of F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital in Banska Bystrica, described his condition as serious but stable after a five-hour operation.
