San Diego County’s series of more than 100 summer movie screenings in various parks returns this Fridaywith a showing of “Barbie.”

Locals can meet at Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego for the event starting at 6 p.m. The opening of the summer movie season will be highlighted with additional activities, including bounce houses, crafts, music and games.

The series will continue on May 31 with a showing of “The Little Mermaid” at Fallbrook Community Center and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” at the Torrey Highlands Neighborhood Park in Carmel Valley. Also next weekend, “The Sandlot” will be shown at Standley Recreation Center in University City on Saturday.

Parks in all corners of the county are participating this summer in places such as Ramona, Julian, Escondido, North Park, Golden Hill, Imperial Beach, San Ysidro and Chula Vista. The film selections are described as family-friendly, with movies that debuted as recently as 2023 along with classics going as far back as “Rear Window” from 1954.

The screenings will continue through October and end with a final film, “The Book of Life,” on Nov. 1 at Old Town State Park. The movies start 15 minutes after sunset on each date. Attendees can bring their own blankets, beach chairs and picnics, and some locations may offer pre-movie activities.
