French PM Attal tries to hold off Jordan Bardella and far-right surge

PARIS — Two young politicians are in a bitter fight over the future of France and Europe.

In one corner: Jordan Bardella, the 28-year-old far-right phenom picked by Marine Le Pen to broaden the appeal of her populist, anti-immigration party and help take it to the halls of power.

In the other: Gabriel Attal, the 35-year-old centrist chosen by President Emmanuel Macron to lead France’s government, counter Bardella and stave off a far-right surge — all at once.
