Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: June 3

The editors at Eater LA dine out several times a week, if not per day, which means we’re always encountering standout dishes that deserve time in the limelight. Here’s the very best of everything the team has eaten this week.

Memela and tlayuda at Tacos del Valle al Carbone in Culver City

Nicole Adlman

Tucked at one end of the parking lot foregrounding the spunky Dreamworld Comics store in Culver City, Tacos del Valle, a truck that has been servicing the Westside for nearly two decades, serves rich Oaxacan fare to comic book aficionados, locals, and drivers passing by. A visit typically requires a taco or few, but regulars know that the menu’s real prizes lie in its behemoth tlayudas, served folded on a plate with tasajo, chorizo, and cecina, and the thick, chewy memelas, which are painted with refried beans and roped with quesillo. All meats are fired on the charcoal grill that butts against the sidewalk; a splash of some salsas and a healthy handful of buttery radishes round out the perfect plate. 12402 Washington Place, Los Angeles, CA 90066. — Nicole Adlman, cities manager

Breakfast sandwich at California Donuts in Koreatown

The doughnut shop breakfast sandwich is an art form in Los Angeles. It’s the lifeblood of anyone who is a little hungover, or just looking for a bit of comfort. The breakfast sandwich at Koreatown’s California Donuts starts with an oversized croissant as a bun, which is so buttery it leaves a sheen on the fingers. It’s stacked high with scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon before being cut in half. The sandwich is so simple, but every bite makes you want to go back for a little more. It’s big enough to share, heavy enough that a nap immediately afterward might be necessary, and absolutely perfect. 3540 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90020. — Rebecca Roland, associate editor

Japanese hairy crab with uni and caviar at Mori Nozomi

There are just too many standout bites at the new West LA omakase restaurant Mori Nozomi to count. The parade of over two dozen dishes comes out at a pace that feels completely measured and thought out, with a lot of the final touches performed in front of the counter by chef Nozomi Mori and her all-woman team. A covered camp stove works as the finishing sear for dishes in a way that’s a lot more elegant than a butane torch. Mori and her sous chef break down an entire Japanese hairy crab in front of the counter, leading to a kind of climactic presentation of stewed crab meat served in the shell topped with uni and caviar. The sweet crab meat congeals and creates a pleasantly thickened texture with minimal seasoning. It’s a celebration of the highest-quality Japanese seafood served with the warmest hospitality I’ve ever received at an LA omakase counter. 11500 Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90064. — Matthew Kang, lead editor

Pork chop at Dada in Echo Park

While most new restaurants are eager to get the word out to potential patrons about what’s on their menu and the kind of vibes to anticipate, Dada in Echo Park has been taking a lower-key approach since opening in March. Without Yelp reviews and social media buzz to preview the experience, my dining companion and I weren’t sure what to expect as we entered the restaurant’s back alley and seated at a corner table. Dada’s food and drinks are perfectly matched with its minimally appointed dining room; plates are purposefully unfussy for well-sourced ingredients to shine. The less-is-more approach worked best with the Kurobuta pork chop accented with grilled cabbage and plenty of pickled mustard seeds. The marbled slab — caramelized and juicy — needed little more than the flame’s lick and a few choice accouterments to leave a lasting impression. 1606 W.
