Jagger Haynes has been derailed at every corner since the Padres selected him in the fifth round in 2020.
On Wednesday, he reminded the organization of his potential.
The 21-year-old left-hander struck out a career-high 11 batters over 6⅔ innings, earning the win in high Single-A Fort Wayne’s 3-1 win at Lake County.
Haynes’ previous best was a six-strikeout effort over six innings in his previous start in a no-decision.
This time, the 6-foot-3, 170-pound Haynes allowed a run on two hits and three walks in lowering his ERA to 4.40.
Through 45 innings, Haynes has a 39-to-28 strikeout-to-walk ratio but has limited opposing hitters to a .225 batting average.
Haynes did not make his professional debut until last season and has thrown just 70⅓ innings as a pro.
Ranked No. 18 in the organization by MLB.com, Haynes can touch 97 mph and sits in the mid-80s with his curveball, his chief secondary offering.
Left fielder Kai Murphy (.699 OPS) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and right fielder Joshua Mears (.438 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double.
Fort Wayne is 26-33.
