Crestwood Plaza had been a destination for shoppers and mall rats for more than 50 years when its final iteration closed in 2013.
The site has recently been reimagined as a mixed-use development called Crestwood Crossing. A new 70,000-square-foot Dierbergs Market store opened there in April, and McBride Homes is building 81 single-family homes in the development.
A closer look at the street signs in Crestwood Crossing via Google Maps show that the developers haven’t forgotten the site’s history, with street names such as Exhilarama Court, Woolworth Drive and Vandervoort Court.
For generations of St. Louisans, those streets evoke fond memories: the bustling neon arcade, Exhilarama, located on the lower level of the mall; the Scruggs, Vandervoort and Barney department store, better known as just Vandervoort’s, which was later replaced by Famous-Barr; and the Woolworth’s department store that closed at Crestwood in 1988.
The street names seemed fixed, but if the developers are looking for any additional ideas, may we suggest: Famous-Barr Boulevard, B. Dalton Drive and Gloria Jean’s Avenue.
