In 2009, LA’s craft beer scene was still nascent when a microbrewery called Eagle Rock Brewery gained a strong following in Northeast Los Angeles. Founded by husband-and-wife team, Jeremy Raub and Ting Su, and Jeremy’s father Steven Raub, the brewery was the first to open in Los Angeles in 60 years. The craft brewery aimed to make high-quality, artisanal beers that appealed to a broad swath of imbibers. Su was also one of the few female brewery owners of color in an industry dominated by white men. Yesterday, Eagle Rock Brewery announced on Instagram that it would be closing after 15 years of operation.
Eagle Rock Brewery was part of a cohort of modern LA County breweries that emerged in the mid-1990s, which included Pasadena’s Craftsman and Torrance’s Strand. During the 2010s, craft beer greatly expanded in popularity across Southern California, a wave which Eagle Rock Brewery rode into a full-sized brewery at 3056 Roswell Street in Glassell Park, around the corner from its namesake LA neighborhood. The brewery expanded into a restaurant in 2014 called Eagle Rock Public House which closed in November 2020. Eagle Rock Brewery’s taproom and operations will continue until the end of June.
Foodie week
Starting June 20 until June 27, Westfield Century City is offering discounted meals and prix fixe menus under the Foodie Week banner. Deals include a three-course dinner at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse for $65 a person, a $35 two-course lunch at Terra at Eataly, and a flight of three ice creams at Hokey Pokey LA for $12. Pret a Manger, which recently opened its first non-LAX location in Westwood a few months ago, is opening another location today, June 18, at 12184 Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. The ready-made sandwich, soup, and coffee specialist opens with a slew of specials, including free tumblers and tote bags for the first 100 customers; a surprise giveaway on June 19; a free 16-ounce drink on June 20 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.; and a free bakery item on June 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Hunter Biden dines at Dan Tana’s
TMZ spotted Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son who was recently convicted of a federal gun felony, on June 13 at West Hollywood hot spot Dan Tana’s with his wife Melissa. Eyewitnesses told TMZ the younger Biden was “in good spirits.” Biden faces up to 25 years in prison for three counts of lying on a federal firearms application.
More Peruvian for Echo Park
Chef Ricardo Zarate is opening another Peruvian ceviche restaurant in Los Angeles, this one called the Hummingbird. Details are thin at the moment except for what Zarate will be serving. Eastside observer and food writer Pat Saperstein snapped a photo of the restaurant’s exterior, which is located at the corner of Berkeley and Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park. Zarate was last at Causita in Silver Lake, which was open for 10 months before closing in February 2023.
