The American Legion baseball season takes a break this week as District 22 hosts the 12-team Admiral Shelton Tournament.
Eight of San Diego’s 14 high-school-age teams have been participating alongside the Yakima (Wash.) Beetles, Lake Elsinore Tigers, Newport Beach Mariners and Clovis Nighthawks.
Games started at 10 a.m. Wednesday and continue through Friday at Hickman Field, home field of St. Augustine High School. La Jolla Country Day hosts a 4:30 p.m. all three days.
The championship game is set for 3 p.m. Friday at either Hickman Field or La Jolla Country Day.
Lake Elsinore Post 200 is coached by former major league outfielder Bobby Kielty. Clovis Post 147 is coached by Rollo Adams who played in the late ’70s at San Diego State.
The top San Diego teams are Post 364 Tomcats, representing West Hills School; Post 275 Skyhawks, representing La Jolla Country Day; Post 149 Growlers, representing University City; and Post 492, representing Hoover.Admission is free at all venues.
