A summer vacation to Nantucket Island doesn’t need much of a sales pitch. The picturesque destination is filled with history, beautiful architecture, delicious food, and plenty of nature to take in. Among the many activities available to fill your schedule, there’s one that stands out among the rest — just be sure to plan ahead.

On the far east side of the island you’ll find The Wauwinet, a stately Relais & Châteaux property that has been welcoming guests since 1875. The shingle-clad resort consists of 32 luxury guest rooms and suites, plus an additional four cottages across the street from the main hotel. Overlooking the Nantucket Harbor, the property is a favorite among summer travelers for the staff’s hospitality and the hotel’s offerings. One such amenity that’s become a must for those summering on the island: an excursion on the Wauwinet Lady.

The 20-passenger boat functions as both a sightseeing cruise and a ferry, to shuttle guests from the White Elephant resort at the center of the island to Topper’s restaurant at Wauwinet. The scenic 50-minute ride around the island is a great way to explore, especially if you’re strapped for time and want a touch of relaxation before dinner.

Guests can choose from three options: a lunch or dinner cruise, which depart from the White Elephant for Topper’s restaurant, or an opportunity to reserve the boat for a private charter. For those who opt for the private charter, there are hors d’oeuvres and drinks available to make the experience even more enjoyable.

Topper’s serves seasonally inspired New England cuisine, with delicacies like oysters farmed just a few hundred yards from the property. The restaurant also boasts a wine list consisting of over 2,000 bottles from around the world, including rare vintages.

Like most things in Nantucket, the Wauwinet Lady is seasonal, open from late June to early September. So if you plan to make your way to the island this summer, be sure to reserve yourself a spot for a truly enjoyable experience on the water before diving into a dinner to remember.
