Volunteers helped remove a total of nearly 1,700 pounds of trash from two beaches in Ocean Beach on July 5 as part of Surfrider Foundation San Diego’s annual post-Fourth of July “Morning After Mess” cleanups.

Altogether, 688 volunteers collected 3,906 pounds of trash at nine San Diego County beaches in three hours, according to Surfrider. The refuse consisted primarily of plastics that otherwise could have washed out to sea, the nonprofit environmental organization said.

The nine sites were chosen because of their high concentration of beach-goers and their reputation for post-Independence Day trash.

Volunteers picked up 1,575 pounds around OB Dog Beach — the most of any of the locations — and 120 pounds around the Ocean Beach Pier.

Here are the weights in pounds at the other sites:

• Oceanside Breakwater Way: 135• South Ponto: 94• Moonlight Beach: 125• Pacific Beach: 216• Mission Beach: 231• Fiesta Island: 1,320• Imperial Beach: 90

“Many of our volunteers remarked that the beaches seemed cleaner than in previous years, which is a great sign,” Gabriel Racca, beach cleanup coordinator for Surfrider Foundation San Diego, said in a statement. “Despite that, we cannot lose sight of the fact that even one piece of trash on the beach is one piece too many.”
