Getting From JFK Airport to the Heart of NYC Just Got Cheaper

New York is encouraging travelers to opt for mass transit to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK( this summer by discounting the AirTrain by half.

The train, which connects JFK with both the subway and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), will now cost just $4.25 to board, according to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. The discounted cost will be in effect for all trips through Labor Day.

Previously, the AirTrain cost $8.50 to board. Children under 5 years old are free.

“With transformational construction underway at JFK, we’re taking steps to mitigate travel delays and affirm what’s always been true – there’s no better option than taking the train to the plane,” New York’s Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “As we kick off a busy summer, we’re making it more affordable for travelers to utilize the AirTrain, offering New Yorkers and visitors from around the world the best-in-class travel experience they deserve.”

Travelers can pay for the AirTrain with a contactless tap (using a credit card or mobile device), or can purchase a new MetroCard for $1.

The decision to discount the AirTrain comes amid heavy construction at JFK as part of a $19 billion project that will create new passenger facilities, including a pair of new international terminals and two revamped terminals, a new ground transportation center, and build new roadways. Once complete, JFK will welcome travelers to a brand-new Terminal 1, a new Terminal 6 (which will connect to Terminal 5), an expanded Terminal 4, and a revamped Terminal 8.

To help mitigate traffic, the Port Authority opened a new (and free) drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at the AirTrain station last month. In addition to taking travelers to public transit, the AirTrain connects travelers to parking lots, hotel shuttles, and the rental car area.

The construction also comes during one of the busiest summers on record. In fact, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened its highest-ever number of passengers on Sunday with more than 3 million, according to the agency. And the Port Authority estimates JFK alone will see 700,000 more passengers this summer than last.
