A centuries-old oak tree, estimated by a certified arborist to be 236 years old and weighing roughly 15 tons, fell in the backyard of the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center on Monday, June 24, just one week before the Senior Center’s annual 4th of July luncheon. This venerable tree, which took root in 1788 — the year the United States Constitution was ratified — has stood as a silent witness to centuries of history.

Arborists had been monitoring the leaning oak for signs of stress, but its sudden collapse took everyone by surprise – especially the poker players who watched it fall from the Garden Room. Remarkably, no one was injured in the incident, and the historic Lilian Rice house remains virtually unscathed. A crane and arborist crews began the arduous task of removing the massive tree and the Senior Center is grateful for everyone’s safety and the preservation of the property.

The old oak tree was an integral part of the Senior Center’s landscape, providing shade, beauty, and a sense of continuity to the area. It’s a significant loss, both environmentally and emotionally. The Senior Center holds a small portion of the tree with plans to create a token of remembrance.

Despite this unexpected event, the Senior Center successfully celebrated its annual 4th of July luncheon. The event proceeded as planned, honoring both the nation’s independence and the enduring spirit of the community.
