Jon Stewart returns to ‘The Daily Show’ in ‘terrible f—ing week’

Jon Stewart knew it was a mistake to come back to The Daily Show this election cycle.

At least that was the joke on Tuesday’s episode, his first to host since the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday.

“Hey Jon, come back to The Daily Show just for the election. It’ll be fun,” Stewart deadpanned. “You can do one day a week. It’ll be a laugh. What could go wrong?”

The Comedy Central series was supposed to have filmed at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week, but that plan was tossed out. Monday’s show was canceled, and Tuesday’s was filmed in New York.

“What a terrible f—ing week,” Stewart said.

The comedian explained that the show would have been relocated in the venue, which would now understandably have amped up security, to inside the “hard perimeter.”

“You really don’t want to be in the hard perimeter. It was locked down,” Stewart said. “They built cages around the theater, and because of that, we felt that we could not logistically put on the theater shows effectively without… people.”

He said the show’s crew would like to go back to Milwaukee and make up some of the events they had planned. “Indogcision,” for instance, was meant to help people both adopt dogs and register to vote.

Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, who former President Donald Trump has chosen as his running mate on the Republican presidential ticket, was the subject of one of his jokes.

“It’s like for vice president, Donald selected the actor who would be hired to play Don Jr. in the Lifetime movie,” Stewart zinged.

The comedian called speaker Sean O’Brien, the president of the Teamsters, a “Rob Cordry doppleganger.”

In all seriousness, Stewart said the country “dodged a catastrophe” and that the attempt on the former president’s life was “terrifying and disorienting.”
