Re “Wildfire smoke doesn’t have to be so deadly” (July 11): Thank you for this piece. Gratefully the author offers ideas on how we can mitigate 10,000 deaths a year in California.
But we need to do more, much more. We need to do it faster. And we need to look for solutions. Many countries put a price on carbon. They know that is the best way to reduce fossil fuels. Currently, the Energy Innovation Act (HR 5744) would make this system law. A carbon fee and dividend would put money in people’s pockets. Two-thirds of households would end up getting more money than any increase in their energy budget.
We have already reached an increase in global temperature of 1.5 degrees centigrade for each of the past 12 months. We are on the path to a tipping point. It’s not too late, but solutions are needed.
