Someone broke into an Otay Mesa apartment, stabbed a 49-year-old resident to death then fled, Chula Vista police said Saturday.
Police are asking for the public’s help as they try to identify the assailant in the Friday evening attack, but said their investigation thus far led them to believe there is no continuing threat to the public.
About 8 p.m. Friday, people called Chula Vista police to report a stabbing at an apartment in the Terra Vista complex on Santa Lucia Road, Sgt Anthony Molina said in a news release. The complex is near Heritage Elementary School in a master planned community north of East Palomar Street.
Officers arrived to find the victim, a 49-year-old man, inside his apartment. He has suffered several stab wounds and was unresponsive, Molina said. Police began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and took over, but the man died at the scene. Police did not release his name.
Molina said the “preliminary information suggests the suspect broke into the apartment wearing a mask, stabbed the victim, and then fled the scene.”
Descriptions provided to police vary, but investigators believe the assailant was a man in a dark hoodie and dark shorts. It’s possible he made his getaway on a motorized scooter with blue wheels, but that is still unverified, Molina said.
Molina asked that anyone with information about the incident contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Tips can be left anonymously.
