Glen Powell will soon be reporting for duty on the Top Gun 3 set.

The actor, who played Jake “Hangman” Seresin in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, provided a brief update on his involvement in the forthcoming threequel during a recent Happy Sad Confused interview with his Twisters costar, Daisy Edgar-Jones. As part of their conversation, the pair were asked whether they thought a Normal People continuation starring Edgar-Jones or a Top Gun 3 with Powell would be released first.

“I mean, I have a date,” Powell declared, seemingly referring to start date on the film. Edgar-Jones immediately perked up at the news, asking, “Top Gun?”

Powell then asked Edgar-Jones if she had a date set for a potential follow-up to her and Paul Mescal‘s hit Hulu series, which she denied. Turning to host Josh Horowitz, he replied, “Okay, then probably me.”

When asked if there was anything that Powell would like to share with everyone, the Hit Man actor suddenly fell mum. “Absolutely not,” he said. An additional attempt to press him about any secrets surrounding the film led the actor to reply, “Uh, Josh, we should go to the next question.”

News that Paramount was in the process of developing a third Top Gun film first began circulating back in January. At the time, Variety reported that Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Maverick, had been tapped to pen the next installment, with Paramount optimistic that Maverick director Joseph Kosinski would return for the project, too.

Powell told Variety later that month that he had received a ton of confused text messages from friends and loved ones after word about Top Gun 3 began to spread online.

“People looked at me like I knew what was going on,” he recalled. “There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to Kosinski, [Tom] Cruise, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back… I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”

A sequel to the 1986 classic, Top Gun: Maverick was the summer blockbuster that the world needed when it soared into theaters in May 2022. The film — which starred Cruise, Powell, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, and more — earned $1.48 billion at the global box office, making it the 12th highest-grossing film of all time. It was also nominated for six Oscars, taking home the award for Best Sound.

Powell previously hinted at his return as Hangman while visiting The Kelly Clarkson Show in May. “It’s above my pay grade,” he admitted when asked if a third film was happening, “but, yeah, I have a feeling there’s probably a cockpit with my name on it.”
