A daily update of athletes from San Diego County competing at this summer’s Olympics:
Monday’s results
Basketball: Kelsey Plum (La Jolla Country Day) had 11 points in 14 minutes of a 102-76 win against Japan to open group play.
Beach volleyball: Chase Budinger (La Costa Canyon High School) and partner Miles Evans won 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) against Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat of France.
Field hockey: Megan Valzonis (Canyon Hills High School) and the U.S. women’s team tied Spain 1-1 in their second game of group play.
Rugby sevens: The Chula Vista-based U.S. women lost 31-14 against France to conclude group play but advanced to the quarterfinals nonetheless and beat Great Britain 17-7 to reach the medal round.
Sailing: Hans Henken (Coronado High School) and partner Ian Barrows moved up to seventh place overall through six of 12 races in the 49er class.
Skateboarding: Jagger Eaton (Encinitas) took silver in the men’s street competition to go with his bronze from Tokyo. Cordano Russell (Carlsbad High School, Horizon Prep) finished seventh representing Canada.
Tennis: Taylor Fritz (Torrey Pines High School) and partner Tommy Paul won 7-6 (16-14), 6-4 against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Roanic of Canada in doubles.
Tuesday’s action
Archery: Catalina Gnoriega, based at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, faces Katharina Bauer of Germany in the individual elimination round.
Beach volleyball: Budinger and Evans play Yorick de Groot and Stefan Boermans of the Netherlands.
Equestrian: 59-year-old Steffen Peters (San Diego) competes in Day 1 of the team dressage event at Chateau de Versailles.
Rugby sevens: The Chula Vista-based women’s team faces reigning gold medalist New Zealand in the semifinals. The games for bronze and gold are later in the day.
Sailing: Weather permitting, Henken and Barrows will continue with the 49er competition in Marseille.
Surfing: Conditions permitting, Caitlin Simmers (Oceanside resident) continues in the women’s surfing competition in Tahiti.
Tennis: Fritz plays his second-round singles match against Jack Draper of Great Britain.
Volleyball: Garrett Muagututia (Francis Parker) and the U.S. men play Germany in their second group game after winning their opener.
Water polo: Alex Bowen (Santana High) and the U.S. men play Romania in their second group game after losing their opener.
