Here’s how San Diego athletes fared in Sunday’s Olympics – San Diego Union-Tribune

A daily update of athletes from San Diego County competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics:

Sunday’s action

Basketball: Kelsey Plum (La Jolla Country Day) had six points in an 87-68 win by the U.S. women against Germany in Lille to finish undefeated in group play. They play Nigeria on Thursday in the quarterfinals in Paris.

Golf: Xander Schauffele (Scripps Ranch High School, SDSU) was the 54-hole leader and birdied two of his first four holes in the final round before fading to a five-way tie for ninth at 12 under.

Track and field: Nia Akins (Rancho Bernardo High School) finished third in her semifinal heat of the 800 meters in 1:58.20 and just missed qualifying for the eight-woman final.

Monday’s action

Beach volleyball: Chase Budinger (La Costa Canyon High School) and partner Miles Evans face reigning Olympic gold medalists Christian Soerum and Anders Mol of Norway in the round of the 16.

Equestrian: Rancho Santa Fe resident Karl Cook is in the individual jumping qualifier at the Chateau de Versailles.

Track and field: Gabby Scott (Westview High School), representing Puerto Rico, goes in the first round of the women’s 400 meters.

Volleyball: Garrett Muagututia (Francis Parker High School) and the U.S. men face Japan in the quarterfinals at noon PDT.

Water polo: Alex Bowen (Santana High School) and the U.S. men conclude group play against Croatia.
