Environmental organization DesBorder went to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in Point Loma on Aug. 3 to kick off a campaign to clean up beach areas while raising funds to provide books to schools and children.

It also introduced a whale sculpture named Reef that doubles as a recycling receptacle that will be taken to all of DesBorder’s events.

All recyclable aluminum cans collected at the events will be donated to the nonprofit Cans4Books to help provide free books to children around San Diego.

DesBorder is the brainchild of Ocean Beach resident and community leader Tracy Dezenzo.
