Gala benefits Agua Hedionda Lagoon

The annual Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s Discovery Gala, themed “Lagoon’s Eleven,” will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa’s Atrium Room, 5480 Grand Pacific Drive. ‘Dare to Repair’ music day at museum

A Community Music Day, themed “Dare to Repair,” will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Museum of Making Music, 5790 Armada Drive. The event features two free screenings of the Academy Award-winning short documentary “The Last Repair Shop.” Guests from the repair department of Bertrand’s Music will share stories and tools of the trade. Bluegrass concert Aug. 24 at church

Whole Hog, a bluegrass band, will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave., as part of the San Diego Folk Heritage concerts. The group blends a traditional bluegrass repertoire with Irish, vintage jazz, yodeling, country, western swing and honky-tonk. Community shuttle expands service to all ages

The Chula Vista Community Shuttle, a free door-to-door service for residents 55 and older, expanded its service to adults of all ages and children accompanied by adults. The fee for riders up to age 54 is $2 per ride. The shuttle runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from the Sweetwater River to the north, to the bayfront on the west, to Interstate 805/Hilltop Drive to the east and L Street to the south. Summer concert features Crown Town

A Coronado Promenade Summer Concert starts at 5 p.m. Aug. 25 featuring Crown Town and Matt Heinecke, who has been performing since his days at Coronado High School. Heinecke, band director of the Coronado Unified School District, is known for his unique style of guitar which draws on folk, classical, rock, jazz, country and bluegrass. Annual Harvest Moon Dinner next month

The Ilan-Lael Foundation will hold its annual Harvest Moon Dinner under the stars from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at 930 Orchard Lane. This year’s dinner will honor the legacy of James Hubbell, featuring live music and dancing, seasonal al fresco dining and local vineyard wines along with a silent auction, featuring work by Visiting Artist Fellows and benefiting the James Hubbell Memorial Art Fund. History buffs sought for workshop

The Oceanside Public Library is looking for history buffs to help find references to the Oceanside Municipal Pier in newspapers and correct digitizing errors at a Corrections Workshop at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 in the Civic Center Library Foundation Room, 330 N. Coast Highway. Participants can help preserve Oceanside’s history by correcting optical character recognition errors in historic newspapers, such as the Oceanside Blade-Tribune and the Oceanside Citizen, which have been digitized on the California Digital Newspaper Collection website. Presentation on pier and its history set for next month

A free presentation on “Oceanside Pier, Past and Present,” hosted by the Oceanside Public Library and the Oceanside Historical Society, will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 in the Civic Center Library’s Community Rooms, 330 N. Registration for golf tournament ends Aug. 18

Brother Benno’s, a nonprofit providing food, clothing, addiction recovery and other services to the area’s homeless community members, working poor and seniors, will hold its sixth annual charity golf tournament Sept. 18 at Goat Hill Park, 2323 Goat Hill Drive. Pro surfer Kelly Slater will support this year’s event, offering a Kelly Slater Wave Co. Surf Ranch experience for live bidding. Additional live and silent auction items will be offered. St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church holds its 92nd annual White Elephant Sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 23 and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at 743 Prospect St., in La Jolla. Items sold range from clothing, accessories, jewelry, antiques, art and housewares to children’s and holiday items and outdoor items. The tour focuses on the Presidio de San Diego, buried underground below the museum. The nonprofit Emilio Nares Foundation holds its 21st annual Harvest for Hope fundraiser at 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Coasterra, 880 Harbor Island Drive. At the credit union's recent free Shred Day, which was held at three area locations, more than 97,000 pounds of paper was collected and shredded. The credit union has collected, shredded, and recycled more than 4.7 million pounds of documents at no charge, and estimates that it has saved more than 40,000 trees based on 120 pounds of shredded paper saving one tree. The credit union also estimated that the Shred Days have saved the community over $500,000 in costs for shredding documents. Free outdoor family movies

Animal shelter cuts adoption fees in half

The San Diego Humane Society offers a 50 percent discount on adoption fees through Sept. 10 as part of Clear the Shelters Month, sponsored by NBC Universal and Telemundo. On Sept. 7, Clear the Shelters Day, adoption fees will be waived entirely. The nonprofit shelter is caring for more than 2,000 animals and over 800 of them are ready to be adopted, including many puppies and kittens. The Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions Tuesdays through Sundays at its campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego. Adoption hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Pets for adoption can be seen at sdhumane.org/adopt.

SANTEE

Free swim days for residents

The city of Santee offers free swim days for Santee residents Aug. 24 and 31 at the Santee Aquatics Center at the Cameron YMCA Activity Pool, 10123 Riverwalk Drive. Free admission is offered during the session times of 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Limited lap swimming will also be available. Community square dances coming up

The Sandpipers Square Dance Club will hold a family-friendly community dance from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24 and Sept. 28 at St. James Parish Hall, 625 S. Nardo Ave. This monthly event introduces square dancing. Singles, couples and families are welcome. Casual attire is recommended, and refreshments will be served. Senior Services celebrates 50 years

A celebration of the 50th anniversary of Senior Services in Vista will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Scraps Workshop at the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens

A free workshop on reducing food waste is set for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, 1270 Vale Terrace Drive. The event, hosted by I Love a Clean San Diego and sponsored by the city of Vista, will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of various composting methods, the importance of keeping organic waste out of landfills, and proper disposal through curbside organic recycling programs. ‘Pickle for the Pantry’ pickleball tournament

Vista Teen Outreach hosts a fundraiser pickleball tournament, “Pickle for the Pantry,” from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Vista Pickleball Club, 685 Taylor St. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring the tournament can email [email protected]. Players interested in competing in the tournament are asked to email [email protected] with the names, divisions (men’s, women’s, mixed) and bracket(s) (3.0. 3.5. 4.0, and 4.5+) along with the date and location of tournament. The cost is $50 for playing men’s, women’s or mixed doubles and an additional $25 to play in a second bracket.

Genetic Genealogy subject of free class

Vista FamilySearch Center will present a free class on Tools for Genetic Genealogists from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at 1310 Foothill Drive. Genealogist Randy Stebbing will teach how to use online tools to explore your family history using the results of your DNA test once you’ve learned the basics of DNA testing.
