For the first time since its inception in 2012, the Del Mar BodySurfing Club (DMBC) recently won the Team World BodySurfing Championships in Oceanside, according to a news release. The DMBC team had previously finished in second place six times in team scoring (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) and third place in 2017. The Pine Street Bodysurfing Association from Carlsbad dominated the Team Championship for 14 years in a row from 2010 to 2023. The “Good Vibes’ from Del Mar surprised the bodysurfing world in 2024 by upsetting the perennial champions from Pine Street and ending their dynasty run.
The coveted team award was brought to Del Mar in large part by the French Chapter of the DMBC, which often includes team members from countries all over the world that are hosted in Del Mar by their local teammates. Uhaina-Kailani Hegoas (16) from France won her age division in Girls 12-17 and also the Women’s Grand Champion honors. Uhaina-Kailani’s father, Matthias Hegoas, placed 6th in Men’s 45-54.
DMBC’s Thomas Gomes upset many favored competitors by winning his Men’s 55-64 age division and also the Men’s Grand Champion award. Meredith Rose captured her 5th age group World Championship in Women’s 45+. Other DMBC bodysurfers placing in the finals and scoring team points include: Niko Mour (3rd in Boys 12-14), Brayden Brisbois (5th in Boys 15-17), Amy Crocker (3rd in Women’s 30-44), Mark Drewelow (3rd in Men’s 45-54), Charlie Crocker (4th in Men’s 45-54), Vern Rogers (6th in Men’s 45-54), Dawn Wood (5th in Women’s 45+), and Bruce Robbins (3rd in Men’s 65+).
