Re “DUI driver gets prison in Torrey Pines crash that killed two friends” (Aug. 30): I applaud Judge Lisa Rodriguez’ equitable and necessary two consecutive life sentences for Christopher Ray Schmittel for causing the deaths of two of his friends while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
We, as a society, must stop the enabling of criminals who feel entitled and expect leniency in a court of law. Two lives were cut short by the irresponsibly caused deaths, while all families have to endure a lifetime of sad memories of loved ones.
All court proceedings must be strengthened to prosecute criminals who knowingly break laws and do not deserve light sentences. From school districts to the courts, enablement has become the norm, rather than proper, stricter punishment where punishment is due.
Once again, “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime!” Enough said.
