The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office will hold a weekly Spanish Academy at the La Colonia Community Center in Solana Beach on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29, giving local residents a chance to meet their local law enforcement officers during programs that will be conducted in Spanish.
The deadline for residents to register is Sept. 17.
Each week will adhere to “a curriculum tailored to the recurring themes and needs identified by the Sheriff’s Office based on deputies’ experiences in the community,” according to a news release. The topics include immigration laws, drugs, domestic violence, human trafficking, hate crimes and gangs.
The program also provides information about topics such as what to expect at a traffic stop.
“It is designed as a relationship-building program to help provide equity in educating our Spanish-speaking community about law enforcement procedures and available resources in San Diego County,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The Spanish Academy also coincides with this year’s National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, taking place under the theme “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”
The La Colonia Community Center is located at 715 Valley Ave. in Solana Beach. For more information, visit cityofsolanabeach.org.
