CNBC host Joe Kernen rebuffed Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s claims that Vice President Kamala Harris’ views are “crystal clear” and slammed the Democratic nominee for avoiding the press during an interview on Monday.
“She hasn’t talked to the press, Gina,” Kernen said. “I know you’re a surrogate, but the American people are frustrated, the media is frustrated at the amount of access anyone has gotten to her for the past 41 days. I know you’ve seen that.”
His comments followed a claim from Raimondo that Harris has been “crystal clear on her values, what she wants to fight for and how she will do it.”
Raimondo said Harris “talks to people.”
“She’s reaching out to me. She’s reaching out to businesses,” Raimondo said.
But Kernen echoed voters’ frustrations over Harris’ relative radio silence since announcing her presidential campaign on July 21, hours after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her.
“She sat down for one interview that was taped and then cut down and certain little things came out from it, but it has been a master class in avoiding any questions and nothing’s been made clear by her,” Kernen said. “Maybe it’s been made clear in dribs and drabs from policymakers when it comes out in print or off a teleprompter at one of her scripted speeches.”
Harris sat down for her first interview since announcing her campaign two weeks ago with CNN’s Dana Bash.
Most CNN panelists didn’t seem to view the vice president’s interview as a major step forward or back, though she has received criticism for taking a long time to speak with the media after announcing her campaign run.
“She’s been impossible to pin down on anything because she hasn’t given any access,” Kernen said. “The American people deserve it, wouldn’t you agree?”
Raimondo said she “respectfully” disagreed because of the unusual circumstances at hand.
“This is a presidential election like no other. She only has a few weeks to do everything, and she’s spending her time talking to Americans,” Raimondo said. “She has a punishing schedule out and about, everywhere, being with the people who she wants to elect her.”
Kernen has previously criticized some of Harris’ proposed policies, particularly a price gouging ban to counter inflated prices at the grocery stores which he called a “flawed idea.”
