Diesel Taylor moved from Arizona about a month before the season began. But his right arm has remained as hot as a Phoenix summer.

Taylor surpassed the 1,000-yard passing mark on the young season, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns in leading Del Norte to a 34-10 win over visiting Poway.

“Each week we’re getting better,” said Taylor, who completed 19 of 30 passes to eight different receivers. “We’re really building chemistry. We’re a young team, and I feel we weren’t fully on the same page until recently.”

The Nighthawks (3-2) took advantage of three Poway turnovers in the first half, two on the Titans’ first two drives.

Sophomore cornerback Madox Romans recovered a Ty Hurst fumble on the game’s opening drive. On the second drive for the Titans (3-2), senior defensive tackle Marcus Hernandez recovered a fumble on a pass play to set Del Norte up in Titans territory.

Taylor connected with sophomore Riley Farrokhi for a 9-yard touchdown for the game’s first score. Senior running back Ryan Remigio scored the first of his three touchdowns for a 14-0 lead. While the scoreboard showed domination, including holding Poway to minus-5 yards rushing in the first half, Del Norte committed nine penalties in the first two quarters.

“It says that we’re resilient, but I’m tired of being resilient,” Nighthawks coach Nick Barnett said. “We’ve got to clean some stuff up. Our guys are playing hard so sometimes you get some of that stuff when you’re playing with emotion and playing physical, but we have to make sure it’s not hurting us.”

Tyler Hughes connected on a 26-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Poway something to build on, but not much else went the Titans’ way.

They finished with minus-32 yards rushing, although Hurst did throw for 232 yards on 19 of 29 passing.

“Uncharacteristic of us,” coach Brandon Harris said. “We hadn’t turned the ball over all season long. We gave out a lot of gifts tonight. It was Christmas. That’s on us.”

Nighthawks senior free safety Kaden Barnett had a pair of sacks to lead a defense that didn’t allow a big play until the end. He also had three carries for 52 yards.

Hurst came into the game with 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions, and the Nighthawks were able to hold him to one score with constant pressure all night.

“Coaches talk about how we need more turnovers when we watch film,” Barnett said. “As captains, we told the defense we need to get those turnovers and show them.”

Remigio scored twice in the second half on back-breaking drives. He ran one in from 6 yards out to cap a seven-play, 65-yard third-quarter crive for a 21-3 lead.

Then he caught a 61-yard touchdown from Taylor that came a drive after Taylor connected with Anthony Taylor for a 3-yard touchdown.

“After last week’s loss (to Carlsbad), we knew we had a lot to work on,” Remigio said. “There’s a lot we still need to get better at, but we were able to score from different areas tonight.”
