Storytime: Actors from Trinity Theater will read and perform “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 in the Rancho Bernardo Library, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive. Ukraine war: Retired Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Paul Lebidine will talk about Ukraine battlefield strategy during the 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo dinner meeting. Friday, Oct. 4

Books and more: The Seven Oaks Community Library will hold its annual book sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 in the Seven Oaks Community Center, 16789 Bernardo Oaks Drive in Rancho Bernardo. All types of books, DVDs, music and jigsaw puzzles will be sold. Most items are $1 or less. Cash only. For details, call 858-487-4058.

Have you made plans? A free workshop on advanced healthcare planning will be offered by Compassion and Choices from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 in the Rancho Bernardo Library’s community room, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive. Saturday, Oct. 5

Free food: LifeBridge Church will distribute food from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 in its lower parking lot, 17645 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Buckheart Ranch, a San Diego Food Bank agency, provides the food. It is typically boxed items, canned goods and fresh produce.   For details, email Marty Redman at [email protected].

Food drive: Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a drive-thru food drive from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 in its upper parking lot, 17010 Pomerado Road. Donations will go to the Salvation Army in Escondido, which distributes food three days per week. Items needed include canned soups, meals, fruits and vegetables; pasta and sauces; plastic jars of peanut butter and jelly; boxed pastas, potatoes, cereal, oatmeal and snacks; pop-top canned meals, beans or Cup-A-Soup.

Rendezvous in Poway: The city of Poway will present its annual Rendezvous in Poway from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road. History comes to life as attendees walk back in time to the 1820s to 1890s and interact with period correct historical encampments and meet mountaineers, cowboys and pioneers. Pan for gold along the banks of Rattlesnake Creek, ride the train, shop at the Artisan Market for handmade crafted items, and visit the Nelson House and the Heritage Museum. Sunday, Oct. 6

Safety fair: Rancho Bernardo’s 14th annual Safety, Health and Wellness Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. This is a different location than previously announced. There will be displays, vendors, a chili cook-off and San Diego Blood Bank blood drive (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Chili tastings are $5. To donate blood, schedule an appointment at SanDiegoBloodBank.org or call 619-400-8251. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Fall festival: Vendors, food and drink, kids activities, live music, a classic car show, and a beer and wine garden will be set up at the 2024 Poway Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Oct. 6 on Midland Road between Poway Road and Hilleary Place. Monday, Oct. 7

Zumba: Dance and get fit with instructor Julie Clemmons from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at the Poway Library, 13137 Poway Road. Support group: Doris Flood, co-owner of and physical therapist at Personally Fit, will talk about managing medications with movement during the 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 7 Parkinson’s Support Group meeting for all North County Inland communities. Ballot measures: Jeanne Weidner from League of Women Voters will present a non-partisan, unbiased evaluation of the November ballot’s state and local measures and propositions at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8. She will speak at the Rancho Bernardo Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee meeting. It will be in the Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive in RB Community Park. Oktoberfest: The Knights of Columbus Valley of Angels Council #9170 at San Rafael Catholic Church are holding their annual Oktoberfest celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 in the parish hall, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo. There will be food, entertainment, raffle prizes and a Bavarian costume contest. Tickets at the door are $20 for adults (19 and older), $10 for children (ages 6-18) and free for children 5 and under. Saturday, Oct. 12

Benefit sale: The Gogo Grandmothers will hold a large sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Green Valley Church, 12395 World Trade Drive in Carmel Mountain Ranch. There will be jewelry, household decor, clothing, kitchen items, working office electronics, craft materials, collectibles, power tools, toys, books, handbags, succulent pumpkins and more. All proceeds will go to provide corn seed and fertilizer and support the group’s feeding program for 2,500 orphans at 20 preschools in Malawi, Africa.

Knife, tool sharpening: The Seven Oaks Woodworking Club will sharpen knives, serrated knives, scissors, and garden and hand tools on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Seven Oaks Community Center, 16789 Bernardo Oaks Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Drop off items between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pick up late Saturday or Monday, Oct. 14. Cash or check. No chainsaws, power tools or saws. For details, call 858-487-4058.

Fire department tour: The Poway Fire Department will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the department’s training tower, 12355 Crosthwaite Circle. Free entertainment with demonstrations, a bounce house and hands-only CPR lessons. Visit the kids’ fire safety education trailer and take home information about home hardening/defensible space from the Poway Fire Safe Council.

History talk: The Rancho Bernardo Historical Society Speakers Series presents Robert Holton and Heidi Marc-Aurele, docents at the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center of Poway, speaking on how the Kumeyaay lived in harmony with nature for the past 12,000 years. Their talk will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Rancho Bernardo History Museum in Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte. Admission is free.
