When most people plan a trip to France, their go-to destination is Paris. But there’s so much more to see in the country, including Provence in southeastern France, home to stunning landscapes like the Alps and rolling vineyards. 

As a French-born travel advisor, I’ve crafted countless itineraries that capture the beauty of Provence, and more specifically, the city of Aix-en-Provence. Here’s how I would spend a  perfect day in Aix-en-Provence. 

Where to Stay

My favorite accommodation in Aix-en-Provence is Villa Saint-Ange, a five-star hotel that’s only a 15-minute walk from Cours Mirabeau, the most bustling street in the area. While the central location is a plus, Villa Saint-Ange shines on its own, too. The hotel is housed in an elevated, 18th-century estate, and has expansive gardens, a swimming pool, and elegantly designed rooms. 

There are several other top-tier hotels in the area, including the Florentine-style mansion of Villa Gallici, Relais & Châteaux’s Château de la Gaude, and the serene Les Lodges Sainte Victoire. 

Morning 

Start the day with a leisurely stroll through the historic center of Aix-en-Provence. To start, make your way to Cours Mirabeau, a tree-lined street that splits the city into north and south. Here, you’ll find various boutiques, cafes, and restaurants to sit outside and enjoy the views. 

At the very end of the street is the Fontaine de la Rotonde, a historic fountain from 1910 adorned with graphics of lions, swans, and mythical creatures. Other top attractions include Hôtel de Ville, the city’s town hall, and two architectural marvels: the catholic churches of Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur and Église Saint-Jean-de-Malte.

Noon 

Sightseeing is only part of the allure of Aix-en-Provence. When it comes to food, there are regional specialties found all around, and the best place to try them is in the markets that open in various squares across the city. While the majority are open daily, Saturday is the most lively. 

Place de Verdun has fruits and vegetables, Place Richelme has fish, and Place de l’Hôtel de Ville has one-of-a-kind flowers. Try madeleines from Madeleines de Christophe — while the treat is found all over France, this shop has the very best. And don’t miss calissons, a candied almond and melon treat, or Pitchouline olives native to the south of France.

By mid-day, you’ll have surely worked up an appetite while exploring the various markets. Some of my favorite options for lunch in the historic center include La Pétite Ferme, Il Était une Fois, and Drôle d’Endroit, all of which serve local specialties. 

Afternoon

To round out your day in Aix-en-Provence, head into the Luberon Regional Natural Park just north of the city. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy the renowned wine of Provence in a private tasting room, plus visit one of the most beautiful villages in the region, Lourmarin. 

Go wine tasting at Domaine de Fontenille.

Visit Domaine de Fontenille, a beautiful winery in the rolling hills of the Luberon. Here, you’ll be welcomed by passionate winemakers who share their knowledge and expertise. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the winemaking process and savor the fruits of their labor. While Provence is most famous for its rosé, the whites and reds are delicious as well.

Visit the village of Lourmarin.

Refreshed by your wine tasting, continue to the heart of Lourmarin. Time seems to slow down in the narrow, cobbled streets lined with honey-colored stone houses. Explore the charming boutiques overflowing with local crafts, indulge in a scoop of ice cream at Le Glacier de l’Ormeau, or sip a cocktail on the terrace at Le Moulin Lourmarin, a wonderful boutique hotel. 

Evening

Once back at your chosen hotel, take the time to rest and reflect. Come dinnertime, indulge in a dining experience at Âma Terra, located at Villa Saint-Ange. This restaurant’s Mediterranean cuisine and elegant setting are sure to leave a lasting impression.
