Melania Trump‘s new memoir reportedly mentions that she and her husband, former President Donald Trump, exchange letters with King Charles.

On Oct. 8, the former first lady of the United States published her memoir, Melania, which The New York Times said includes a mention of “an ongoing correspondence with King Charles III.”

In a snippet shared by Vanity Fair, Melania, 54, recounted how Queen Elizabeth and her family “extended a warm welcome to us, treating us with the utmost hospitality” during their controversial state visit to the U.K. in June 2019, and that she and Donald exchange letters with the King today.

“As we bid farewell to Her Majesty, we extended a cordial invitation for her return visit to the United States,” Melania wrote, according to Vanity Fair. “She expressed her gratitude with a warm smile. Sadly, Her Majesty wasn’t able to visit with us again before her death in 2022, but our friendship with the Royal Family continues, and we exchange letters with King Charles to this day.”

In July, it emerged that the King, 75, sent a letter to Trump, 78, after he was shot in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The former president is currently seeking a second term on the Republican ticket and is running against Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Though Buckingham Palace doesn’t comment on the sovereign’s private correspondence, The Independent said that Melania wrote in her eponymous memoir about how she first met the future King in 2005 and reconnected with him at the state visit during her husband’s presidency.

“The evening’s state banquet was a formal and elegant affair. I was seated next to Prince Charles, and it was an absolute pleasure to reconnect with him,” the former first lady wrote in Melania, according to The Independent.

“Our paths had crossed many years ago in New York City. This time we engaged in an interesting conversation about his deep-rooted commitment to environmental conservation,” she wrote, according to the outlet. 

The state banquet of the Trumps’ state visit was memorably attended by Queen Elizabeth, then-Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who had welcomed their first child, son Prince Archie, now 5, the month prior, were not at the diplomatic dinner.

Much has been made of what Queen Elizabeth privately thought of Donald Trump, and Craig Brown writes in the new book Q: A Voyage Around the Queen that the monarch was put off by the way the then-president acted towards her when they met.

Donald and Melania were hosted by the Queen in the U.K. twice during his presidency: once for a working trip in July 2018 and again for a state visit in June 2019. The two also connected at the NATO 70th anniversary reception at Buckingham Palace that December.

“A few weeks after President Trump’s visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude’: she particularly disliked the way he couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting,” Brown wrote in A Voyage Around the Queen, according to an excerpt in the Daily Mail on Aug. 19.

Trump fired back at the allegations in Brown’s book, which was published in the U.S. on Oct. 1, and told the Daily Mail in a video published on Aug. 22 that he was Queen Elizabeth’s “favorite president.” 

“We spent hours together at a state dinner. She was a fantastic woman…I heard I was her favorite president, and you’ve heard that too. She would say it to a lot of people,” he told the outlet. 

Queen Elizabeth met with 13 of the 14 American presidents who served during her 70-year reign. Following her death in September 2022 at age 96, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden represented the U.S. at her state funeral at Westminster Abbey.
