Why go with a stuffy old priest when you can have your camera-ready TV dad officiate your wedding?

That’s exactly what Sex Education star Connor Swindells did at his recent wedding to actress Amber Anderson. The couple revealed to Vogue that Swindells’ on-screen father, British actor Alistair Petrie, officiated the ceremony. In a picture jointly shared by Swindells and Anderson on their Instagram accounts, Petrie stands behind Swindells like a proud father, the both of them beaming. In another, headmaster Groff himself can be seen at the altar in a kilt, with Swindells raising his fist in a triumphant pose.

On Sex Education, Swindells plays Adam Groff, the repressed son of Moordale Secondary School headmaster Michael (Petrie). The pair have a fractious relationship throughout the first two seasons as Adam struggles to accept his sexuality and Michael is increasingly loathed for his stubborn adherence to archaic codes of pupil conduct. After he’s fired from his post and left by Adam’s mother Maureen (Samantha Spiro), he and Adam work to develop the kind of relationship where you actually could imagine the former officiating the wedding of the latter.

Swindells and Anderson met on the set of Autumn de Wilde‘s 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Emma. The photographer-turned-filmmaker also attended the wedding, even snapping a few photos that ran in the Vogue spread. “We also asked Autumn, director of Emma, to do a speech during the drinks reception,” Anderson told the magazine. “It meant so much to us to have her speak – we met because of the movie she made, and over the years she has become a best friend, spiritual guardian, advisor, and adopted auntie. She means the world to us.”

Swindells and Anderson both played pivotal roles in Emma. Swindells played Robert Martin, the titular character’s (Anya Taylor-Joy) first suitor who eventually marries her companion Harriet (Mia Goth). Anderson, meanwhile, played Jane Fairfax, Emma’s romantic rival for the affections of Frank Churchill (Callum Turner).

After Emma, Anderson appeared in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part II and played Diana Mitford of the famous Mitford sisters on season 6 of Peaky Blinders. Swindells appeared as the real world intern Aaron Dinkins in Barbie, and after Sex Education‘s final season aired in 2023, he starred in the historical drama William Tell, which had its premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
