B.C.’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) — has been called in after a suspect was hit by a vehicle while fleeing from police in Victoria.

VicPD officers received a report of a theft in progress on Gorge Road near Rock Bay Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Friday.

Police found the suspect and while attempting to make an arrest, the suspect ran away into traffic.

The suspect was then hit by a civilian vehicle and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The IIO is a civilian-led body that investigates incidents of death or serious harm that may have resulted from actions or inactions of police officers.
