‘Brat summer’ may be over, but Charli XCX’s rise to fame is not – San Diego Union-Tribune

“Brat summer” may have come to a close, but 32-year-old British singer-songwriter Charli XCX’s meteoric rise from budding pop star in 2013 to arena-filling artist in 2024 is far from over.

But what is Brat, and what is Brat summer, you may ask? Well, it’s a couple things.

First of all, it’s the name of Charli XCX’s blockbuster summer album, which was released on June 7. The record scored a whopping 95 score on music, movie and TV aggregator Metacritic and a perfect score from British publication The Guardian.

Its unapologetic club-inspired sound caught fire across the world, as did the album cover — consisting of warped title, “brat,” in sans serif font with a bright green background. During the album rollout, some of her promotional material was displayed on a wall — coined “Brat wall” in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

“Brat” has become an unignorable phenomenon, particularly with young people on the internet. And she’s tirelessly working to promote and expand her work.

Charli XCX released several “Brat” remixes featuring pop stars — “Guess” with Billie Eilish, “Girl, so confusing” with Lorde and “Von Dutch” with Addison Rae. Just three days after the album landed on streaming services, she released a deluxe album, “Brat and It’s the Same but There’s Three More Songs So It’s Not.” This time around, the title is pretty self explanatory.

But “Brat” isn’t just an album; It’s also a lifestyle, in the words of Charli XCX herself. In a TikTok, she explained that a brat is “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes, who feels herself, but then also maybe has a breakdown, but kind of parties through it.”

Charli XCX’s cultural influence has even entered the political arena, after she tweeted “kamala IS brat” on July 21 — a modern endorsement of sorts. It garnered 334,000 likes and sparked much social media discourse.

Kamala Harris’s campaign has since embraced the album’s aesthetic and music on social media platforms. This adoption of “Brat” is not only a testament to Democrats’ extensive efforts to appeal to Gen Z, but also to recognize Charli XCX’s influence on pop culture.

Fresh off of her career-defining record and widening appeal, Charli XCX is in the midst of  “Sweat Tour” — featuring some of her biggest shows to date, and another budding pop star as an opener. Up until now, Charli XCX has put on several DJ sets with producer A.G. Cook and with her fiance, the 1975 drummer George Daniel, in addition to various festival appearances.

The “Sweat Tour” co-stars pop artist Troye Sivan, an Australian singer, songwriter and actor. His varied career has taken him from appearing as young Wolverine in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” to collaborating with Kacey Musgraves and receiving Grammy nominations for best music video and best pop dance recording for his 2023 single “Rush.”

On Friay, she and Sivan will perform at Viejas Arena — Charli XCX’s biggest San Diego show to date. Her last San Diego appearance was at the Observatory in North Park in  2022, in support of her album “Crash.” That venue has a 1,000 person capacity; Viejas arena can seat more than 12,000.

That isn’t to say Charli XCX hasn’t reached fame before her new record. She is often credited for the rise of the subgenre known as hyperpop, although she rejects any narrow labels for her music.

While “Brat” has become deeply integrated with the internet lexicon, she’s already had a collection of chart-topping hits. “Boom Clap” has nearly a half-billion streams, and anyone who listens to the radio has surely heard “Fancy,” her collaboration with rapper Iggy Azalea.

The “Sweat Tour” began Sept. 14 in Detroit and will conclude next week in Seattle. Before they perform at Viejas Arena, Charli XCX and Sivan have two big nights at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan aren’t the only major acts coming to Viejas Arena this fall. Hip hop/R&B artist Don Toliver and Teezo Touchdown will be performing just two days later, followed by R&B singer Kehlani’s headlining show on Oct. 25.
