The BC SPCA says it is recommending charges of animal cruelty after a dog was tethered to a vehicle and dragged 200 metres in Merritt.

The collie-mix dog was seized and taken to a vet in Kamloops, where he is recovering.

“He has abrasions to his front and back paw pads and hocks, (the joint between the dog’s hind leg and foot) and his nails were shredded,” said BC SPCA senior officer of protection Eileen Drever.

“He is also underweight with a body score of two out of nine, which is very thin.”

Fortunately, the dog — named Sunny by SPCA staff — did not suffer any internal injuries.

As well, he is being treated for his malnourishment.

“Sunny has already gained two kilograms while in our care,” Drever said.

She says the dog has become a staff favourite.

“Everyone is so impressed at his resiliency,” says Drever.

“Sunny loves spending time outside in the sunshine, playing in the field with staff and volunteers. He is a huge fan of cuddles in his kennel and loves nothing more than hanging out with people.”

The investigation is ongoing, and it isn’t known when the pooch will be available for adoption.

The BC SPCA says it helped more than 130,000 animals last year.
